Answers
- What is the difference between an ALERT and a MESSAGE?
An ALERT is a short bit of text information sent when you need an
immediate response or action. Use Alerts to announce phone calls,
visitors, or patients. For example: MR. SMITH ON LINE 3 or COME INTO MY
OFFICE PLEASE.
A MESSAGE is sent when an immediate response is not necessary. Think of
it as an electronic telephone message slip. Messages are date and time
stamped, and stored for later recall and review. For example: CALL MS.
JONES WHEN YOU GET BACK FROM LUNCH - 555-1212 RE 3 PM APPOINTMENT. A
message can be up to seven screens in length. An individual Amtel unit
can store hundreds of messages, however the message counter will only
display the maximum number of 99.
- Why is there a number flashing on the right side of the screen?
The number indicates the number of messages stored. If the number is
flashing, at least one of the stored messages has not been read.
- My time/date is wrong. How do I change it?
To adjust the time/date on the Amtel System:
- At the keyboard at the front desk, press the Set Up Key
- Press the number 0
- Screen displays "Set Time/Date"
- Type in the new time/date - be sure the AM/PM is correct.
- Press send.
Note: If the screen reads "Auto Time Keeping Mode", go to the other keyboard and perform the steps described above.
- Who do I call if I need service or repair of my Amtel System?
It is suggested that you call your local authorized Amtel dealer or
Amtel Systems Corporation before disconnecting a unit to go through a
few simple troubleshooting steps. In some cases when a broken" unit is
sent in for repair without going through troubleshooting first, we
sometimes find something simple that could have been easily corrected
onsite was overlooked. To save you time and money you may want to
consider troubleshooting before a unit is removed from the system.
- Why does the time change erratically on my screen?
There is more than one unit set to "central" timekeeping on the same
network. There should only be one "central" timekeeper; all other
keyboard units need to be changed to "auto" or "local" timekeeping.
- How do I add or delete names for the "flashing" choices on my Amtel
units?
The Amtel Text Communication system can be customized in many different
ways to suit your individual needs. Please refer to the online
manuals/quick guides. Of if you prefer to speak with someone please
contact your local authorized Amtel dealer or call Amtel Systems
Corporation where one of our technical support staff will be glad to
assist you over the phone. At Amtel Corp. we keep records of the
programming setups of many of our customer's equipment and can easily
help you over the phone.
- Is there a way to delete all of the messages stored on every Amtel
unit?
No. Each message must be deleted individually at each unit. Messages are
stored until deleted.
- Is there a way to delete all of the alerts stored on every Amtel
unit?
No. Each alert must be deleted individually at each unit. Up to 50
alerts are stored in an Amtel unit. As each new alert is received the
oldest alert is automatically deleted.
- The phrase COMM ERROR (SEE USER GUIDE) appears on my screen. What
does that mean?
The phrase is short for "Communication Error" and is displayed to let
you know that your communication is not going through to the intended
recipient. A number of situations can cause this error to occur. Check
the following:
- Be sure you are sending to the correct address of the recipient.
- Ensure that each unit on the network has a unique address.
- Make sure both units have secure wiring connections.
- If this does not solve the problem see your company Amtel System
- Administrator, call your local dealer or Amtel Systems Corporation.
Why does my display have asterisks and zeros?
The Screen Exerciser is activated. The phone calls to customer service
at Amtel Systems are increased during the Spring and Fall seasons, when
clocks are adjusted for Daylight Savings Times. Our newest units do not
need to be adjusted for Daylight Savings Time. Check your time settings
to be sure that the AM/PM setting is correct or reprogram the setting to
activate the feature after office hours. The default is 12 midnight for
one hour daily.
To set the time: At the central timekeeper unit, re-enter correct
time/date. At a keyboard unit press set-up and zero. Enter the correct
time and/or date. Press send. Note: if when you do the above step the
screen displays "auto" timekeeping mode, then you will need to locate
who the "central" timekeeper/the person who controls the time at your
location.
Why does my display show the day and numbers and display the time in hours
and minutes and seconds and counting?
The elapsed timer is running. To stop the timer at a keyboard, press the
TIMER key (Z), and then press CLEAR. To stop the timer at a wallmount/panel
unit, press the TIMER button, and then press CLEAR.
There is a password set on an Amtel unit and we don't know what the
password is. Is there a way for you to reset it for us?
If a password is lost or forgotten, we cannot reset it for you. The
Amtel programming structure is secure and does not allow passwords to be
reset if they are lost or forgotten. The only way to bypass a password
is to reset the entire memory of the unit. When you reset an Amtel unit,
all customized programming, including stored messages and alerts are
lost.
I deleted a message and I need to view it again, can it be
retrieved?
No. Once a message is deleted, it is gone forever. The Amtel programming
structure is secure and does not allow deleted messages to be restored.
I deleted an alert and I need to view it again, can it be retrieved?
No. Once an alert is deleted, it is gone forever. The Amtel programming
structure is secure and does not allow deleted alerts to be restored.
My Amtel unit is unable to send or receive messages or alerts. What
should I do to fix it?
In many instances, simply cycling power on the Amtel unit will correct
this problem.
- At a keyboard/desktop panel unit: unplug the power cord on the back
of
the unit, wait about 15 seconds and plug it back in. Now check to see
if you can send or receive alerts and/or messages.
- At a flush wallmount unit it is necessary to take the unit off the
wall. After taking the unit off the wall, there may be a back plate on
the unit. the back plate is held on with four short screws. After
pulling the back
plate aside, you can then see where the 4 wires (red, black, green, and
white) terminate on a plug that is colored either a red/brown or white.
Grasp the 4 wires near the plug and pull to disconnect plug from the
power source. Wait 15 seconds and reconnect. Check unit for proper
operation.
At a surface wallmount unit the plug is accessible. Disconnect the plug
from the power source. Wait 15 seconds and reconnect. Check the
unit for proper operation.

The phrase INPUT FORMAT ERROR appears on my screen. What does that
mean?
This error message is seen when you are programming/customizing an Amtel
unit if data has been entered incorrectly, or invalid/improper data has
been entered while programming in the "Special Function" mode. To
correct the problem re-enter data, refer to the Programming section in
System Administrator Manual for step-by-step instructions, or call your
local authorized Amtel dealer or Amtel Systems Corporation.
My unit displays "set address", what should I do?
Contact your authorized Amtel dealer or Amtel Systems Corporation.
My Amtel unit is displaying old alerts/messages. (From yesterday or
earlier today.)
Operator error. Someone pressed either the message recall or alert
recall key to bring up a message/alert in storage and neglected to press
clear to return unit to idle mode: time/date screen. While the unit was
in the recall mode, it was displaying the recalled message/alert and
still receiving messages and alerts that were being sent on your system.
When someone pressed clear to use the unit, the Amtel program took over
and began to display all of the messages/alerts that had been received.
The program structure of the Amtel unit requires that all received
messages/alerts be displayed. So until all of those messages/alerts are
displayed, it appears that the unit is receiving old communications when
if fact, it is only now that the unit has been given the opportunity to
display them. You can either wait for the unit to clear itself or you
can stay with the unit and press clear to clear out each alert/message.
To prevent this inconvenience remember to clear a unit to time/date
after recalling messages/alerts.
